Dear Parents and Students. My name is Michelle Siew and I offer mobile piano lessons to families living in the Perth Metro area. Here is some information on my music history and qualifications.
Performance History
I enjoy improvising and playing flexibly – safe to say, I have perfect pitch. I play by ear now more than read music sheet (which I can still do)! My musical experiences have been enhanced in the past 9 years. I have been playing in the church setting, participated in an Easter event in the past two years, played at the quadriplegic centre in Perth, and so on. In the past 3 years, I have also started to be involved in songwriting and cross-collaborated with team members.
Teaching History
For the past half a decade, I have taught piano at home to beginners and those at the intermediate levels in a home setting. I have the privilege of also teaching a few of my students how to play by ear. Some have opted to learn to play Christian songs. I also engage in piano teaching at two primary schools in Perth throughout the past two terms.
Academic History
As for music, I completed the ABRSM Grade 8 practical exam and the Grade 6 theory exam – both in 2010. For my tertiary education, I completed the Bachelor of Commerce in 2015.
What I Enjoy Most About Music and Teaching
I really enjoy teaching music as it is very fulfilling to share my passion and to see others grow into their fullest potentials. What I love most about teaching music is that I can be flexible with my lesson plans to accommodate every individual since everyone has different learning paces. I can integrate creativity into my teaching which is amazing!
What Makes Me Unique as a Tutor / My Strengths
I am very detail-oriented and organized when it comes to lesson planning. I also love to explain about musical terms and give feedback to students as precisely as possible. I also treasure punctuality so I usually turn up to my music classes at least 10-15 minutes before they begin.
Experiences with Kids
I have been assisting in the annual children’s camp run by my church throughout the past 7 years. I play kids songs on the piano and during the other sessions, I help to care for the primary school kids. I also tutor primary and high school kids at Touchpoint Community Centre twice a week after school hours.
Teaching Philosophy
While each student’s learning abilities and personalities vary, I have learnt to be creative in planning lessons and to help them enjoy their learning experience with the hope that music will become their passion. I have helped a couple of students prepare for AMEB and ABRSM exams. In the process of teaching, I hope that each individual develop the virtues of perseverance and committed excellence.
It has been a challenging journey but I am thankful that I can call music my passion. I look forward to teaching and inspiring more people.
